Description

""Upstream"" (and I use that term very loosely since I do not build or intend to build Ubuntu Touch in the forseeable future) has a bug tracker at https://github.com/ubports/ubuntu-touch so this project exists for me to note MY OWN PERSONAL wishes for the software. Of course, if you can see this and you actually use or know how to use Ubuntu Touch, sure you can join in here if you really want.

Why I'm tracking this:
I have a mission to get myself a ""free"" (as in freedom) phone. I have at least 2 handsets atm so this means I can keep my Android install running, with its years of polish and refinement, and its huge ecosystem, while I evaluate other distributions on other handsets. Both of my working handsets at the moment are Onepluses. I acknowledge that it's not completely free (in the way that, say, iirc, Ubuntu ships a mainline kernel with blobs in it and is therefore not free) but I will just accept the firmware blobs and such right now as a simple and unavoidable fact of life. And of my budget.
Besides, if I go to a dumbphone, I can't tinker with that or inspect how it works either.

Do want:

  • data sovereignty
  • retention of most features of the phone hardware
  • workarounds for losses in software functionality
  • The ability to write my own software (and make my own enhancements/changes)
  • Root or equivalent - that is, the ability to break and brick whatever I want

Interesting but not essential:

  • Desktop apps
  • Android apps, since I only have access to handsets built for android

Do not want:

  • Preinstalled software which phones home - although I will make allowances if "home" is currently a ""good guy"" like KDE eV or UBPorts
  • To basically run Desktop Linux or something equally inappropriate in my pocket (I want a phone, not a computer. Let's draw a line here)
